Driver Improvement Program Reason Code Descriptions

VOLUNTARY

If you need to add points to your driving record. Keep in mind you can only have a MAXIMUM of +5 points on your record. If you already have +5 you will not get more added to your record. You can only get + points once every 2 years per the DMV (not even 1 day sooner).

DMV Required

You were sent a notice/letter in the mail to complete an 8 Hour Driver Improvement Clinic by a certain date. Or if you have a suspended license and need to re-instate your license you will need to take this 8-hour course. (Please note we ONLY report to the VA DMV, it is your responsibility to report to any other state DMV if needed.)

Court Ordered (no points given)

You have gone to court and have been issued an order from the judge or your attorney to complete the 8 Hour Driver Improvement clinic to either lessen your charge or to waive your charge in full.

If you have gotten a ticket and are taking this course PRE-COURT. This will allow you to take the course and show the completion to the judge. This way if you are still given NEGATIVE points towards your record, you have the option to take the course AGAIN as VOL (a few weeks after court) and gain + points to better your record.

** UNDER 21??? IMPORTANT INFO BELOW**

Please note if you are under 21 and are taking a DIP course pre-court as either VOLUNTARY OR COURT ORDERED, the VA DMV may send you another letter/order in a couple months stating that you are REQUIRED to take the course again. You will need to take the course as DMV Required then.
